Improve Community/Support/Getting-involved Landing pages

The initiative to Improve Community, Support and Getting-involved Landing pages will help direct people to the areas most relevant and useful to meet their goals, such as:

Community: "Where is everybody? I want to meet people and participate, learn and share."

Get involved (or getting involved): "How can I help? I need specific guidance on how I can be an effective contributor. "

Support: "I need help! Where can I find answers to my questions?"

  1. Spent a while yesterday browsing all over d.o to try and find a definitive guide to

    a) get a development environment setup

    b) start fixing some novice issues

    c) create patches and upload them to the site.

Felt like I was going round in circles at times, maybe just me.

more discussion has now moved to Drupal.org Improvements on (gdo: http://groups.drupal.org/node/214288) but I sort of got it off topic(not intentionally). Also the Improve the About Section idea here too.

For a development environment I just found this: Drupal Quickstart: http://drupal.org/project/quickstart

  3. I have an idea relevant to this discussion that I will submit after I finish checking that it hasn't yet been submitted.

The basics: use the drupal.org Dashboard. Ask people to indicate more about their interests: New to Drupal, Developer, Site Builder, Content Editor, etc. Based on the checkboxes marked, display blocks (per interest area) with links to the most relevant sections of drupal.org

    1. I can't figure out how to post the idea (last step has me stumped), so here it is, please help:

Personalize the Dashboard by adding "roles"

Adding another level of personalization to the Dashboard to help newcomers, and remind other folks about areas of the site that might be personally important, add a question about roles to the Dashboard, with checkboxes so that one or more role could be checked. Each checked role would trigger a block displaying a set of links to some of the most important nodes/sections of drupal.org for that role.

Roles would include a list like this: New to Drupal, Developer, Site Builder, Content Editor, Web Master, etc. Based on the checkboxes marked, display blocks (per interest area) with links to the most relevant sections of drupal.org per role.

Make it possible to change the checkboxes at will, so that folks have the option to turn them on and off as needed.
