I think the single thing I missed the most when starting to learn the Drupal API was usage examples. Take the l() function. At http://api.drupal.org/api/drupal/includes!common.inc/function/l/7 I can see its signature and the actual code it executes, but there's no example of how to use it except in the comments.
As following eliminated "subscribe" comments and created useful statistics (xx followers on this issue), actual voting could eliminate "+1" comments and create useful statistics (xx votes).
Have the Drupal API documentation as an ebook to study while away from computer.
Many web projects offer the ability to log into a sample application to "try it before you buy it" without having to download and install it somewhere. Since installation has always been a pain point for new or non-technical users, I think it would greatly help people in the evaluation of Drupal to be able to do so--perhaps with a few different sample applications pre-built to play with, like a blog, an ecommerce site, ...more »
